Mrs. Mary (nee Godby) Akersten, 70, died on January 18, 2015 in Manahawkin, N.J. A funeral mass will be offered in Our Lady of the Lake Church, Verona on Friday, January 23 at 10 a.m. Visiting in the Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Born in Orange, Mrs. Akersten grew up in Kearny and lived in Morristown for 20 years and Verona for 15 years prior to moving to Waretown in 2000.
Mrs. Akersten has a BA in Mathematics from Caldwell College and worked as a loan officer for the Trust Company of New Jersey in Jersey City.
She is the wife of Robert Akersten, the step-mother of Kirsten Minteer (and her husband, James) and Amy Miller (and her husband, Glen “Matt”). She is also survived by her sister, Helen Godby, her grandchildren, James Minteer, Ellen Minteer and Fionnoula Miller and lifelong friend, Karen Peterson Sprengel. She was predeceased by her brothers, Michael and Paul Godby.
