LydiaSuarezMrs. Lydia H. Suarez, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother left for her eternal resting place on January 6, 2016. A funeral mass will be offered at Our Lady of the Lake Church, Verona on Monday, January 11 at 10 a.m. Visiting will be held at the Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona on Sunday from 2 to 5 pm.

Lydia was born in Cuba where she taught English and worked as a journalist. She came to the United States in 1956 and began anew starting with her first job at Woolworth’s in Miami to her last position as a guidance counselor at Dickinson High School in Jersey City.

A proud public educator, she saw the best in everyone and demanded that they advance, pursue their dreams and fulfill their promise. She earned two Masters and traveled the world with her beloved husband Guillermo whom she lost in 2001. Lydia was a voracious reader and possessed a relentless intellectual curiosity. She never shied away from a challenge and battled breast cancer since 1997.

Lydia’s love for her family was all encompassing. Lydia leaves behind a bereft daughter Lydia Danese and devoted son-in-law Thomas Danese. She was a friend and grandmother to her darling granddaughter Alexandra who was always at her side. Under the direst of circumstances, she could smile at the sight of her grandson Justin who was secretly her favorite person. She had an extraordinary bond with her little granddaughter Katherine and recently began to teach her how to count. Lydia was also a Mom to Leonor and Cheryl, Grandma to Corinna and Frank and loyal friend to the many who love her. Her mark on this world will not be forgotten.
